The most exciting reason to visit Oaxaca in the months of October and November is undoubtedly the celebration of "The Faithful Deceased, All Saints or the famous Day of the Dead" Being in Oaxaca during these dates is like drinking water Fresh from a bucket of mud after a long walk in the sun and on the hottest day of summer; all this, but being really in winter because after living and celebrating the Guelaguetza, who doesn't want Oaxaca anymore?!
Imagine this scene:
You are arriving at the pantheon of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, - one of the main attractions of the celebrations in Oaxaca - the night has already fallen, there are lights, candles, smell of copal smoke, mole and mezcal, many people sitting around the tomb of their special guest, laughing singing, praying, talking and remembering anecdotes Lived, still together, before the game, they have arrived since the afternoon and the calendar tells us that today is Oct 31, 2022. The ground is full of very fragrant flower petals, "The flower of the sun, Cempasúchil," you can feel that you float on them. I am sure that at this point, dear reader, you understand me much more; if in any way possible you could observe us on the fly, the most traditional Oaxacans at this time, as well as the ghosts of "Charles Dickens' Christmas Tale", you would realize that we are eager to meet with them, those who left, to replace the Longing for laughter and joy, ... it is that, here, there is a very long wait, a very laborious preparation and a very great care in the elaboration of everything: the offerings, the food, the mole, the higaditos! And that's not why it's about reducing efforts, on the contrary, it's about especially pleasing the tastes of the guests, that's why we prepare the mole for 30 days, grinding chocolate, Seeds, carefully preparing each ingredient, toast to the clay griddle, gathered in the kitchen because the occasion is also a reason to be more united and coexist, some still in a wood-fired kitchen, tile and wood ceiling where the stove is located; well, we know that the day is approaching, That promised day that faith, beliefs and rites allow us Mexicans, but especially here in Oaxaca, to meet again, offer the most precious dishes, drinks and objects that we miss with all our hearts.
And as we say here in Mexico: What do you think?! *All this attentive and dedicated preparation is due to the fact that on Oct 31, we stay almost all day in the pantheon because at 3 in the afternoon, the little ones will arrive first, as every year, the little ones, those who crossed the threshold of life being Children, and later those who started their way to the afterlife as adults, this is the reception for them and the invitation card sent says it precisely "favor to arrive on time and with the best attitude to enjoy the family and food."

Yes, to enter a walk that will fill our view through facades covered with colorful murals with skulls, charming little cafes, cobbled streets and the church of San Matías, because Jalatlaco is One of the most picturesque and cultural neighborhoods that you will know on the world map, has the tradition of Comparsa del Barrio for more than 50 years and it is worth highlighting the activity of a Plastic Artist born right here In the neighborhood of Jalatlaco, Kevin Navarro, ideologue, expressionist, who in his own words shares with us:
"I have made some murals in Jalatlaco, one in collaboration with Family and friends of the site, which is known as the house of the comparsa on Aldama Street and I have made other murals with the same theme, since the comparsa is an icon Cultural of the neighborhood, *is known for it, and well, with the intention of generating a visual culture, that's why I portray skulls, the little devils, and things related to the day of the dead"
He has participated in the Mural Festival of La Villa de Zaachila, an outstanding ancestral Zapotec community that gives us art by walking through its streets thanks to the initiative of preservation and artistic expression, of collectives such as Hacer Arte and this year, Kevin participates with the mural that will be presented on November 1 and 2, located on Santos Degollado Street in the Barrio de San Pedro.

La razón más emocionante para visitar Oaxaca en los meses de Octubre y Noviembre sin duda es la celebración de“LosFieles difuntos, Todos Santos o el famoso Día de Muertos” Estar en Oaxaca durante estas fechas es como beber agua fresca de un balde de barro después de una larga caminata bajo el sol y en el día más caluroso de verano;todo esto, pero estando realmente en Invierno porque después vivir y celebrar la Guelaguetza, ¡¿quién no quiere más Oaxaca?!
Imagina esta escena:
Estás llegando al panteón de Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, - una de las atracciones principales de las celebraciones en Oaxaca- ya ha caído la noche, hay luces, velas, olor a humo de copal, mole y mezcal, muchas personas sentadas en torno a la tumba de su invitado especial, riendo cantando, rezando, platicando y recordando anécdotas vividas, aún juntos, antes de la partida, han llegado desde la tarde y el calendario nos dice que hoy es 31 de Oct del año 2022 . El suelo está lleno de pétalos de flor muy olorosa,”La flor del sol, Cempasúchil”, puedes sentir que flotas sobre ellos al caminar entre los pasillos del panteón; son los caminos que conectan al más allá, desde el Mictlán hasta el mundo terrenal, cosmovisión fundida de Mixtecas y Zapotecas que aprecia a la muerte como una estación más del camino completo del ciclo de la vida.
Bueno, ya has recorrido el pasillo principal del panteón y ahora centras la mirada en otro punto, notas que hay música, instrumentos de percusión y de viento,ahh, claro!, son las bandas filarmónicas tradicionales que vinieron a dar alegría a las familias y a sus invitados…
No puedes concebir lo que ves, hay tapices de flores y arena que son verdaderas obras de arte elaboradas sobre los sepulcros, iluminadas a media luz con filas de velas, en tu mente solo surge un pensamiento (tengo que estar allí!!)
Estoy seguro que en este punto, apreciado lector, me comprendes mucho más; si de alguna forma posible pudieras observarnos al vuelo, a los Oaxaqueños más tradicionales en estas fechas, así como los fantasmas de “Cuento de Navidad de Charles Dickens”, te darías cuenta que estamos ansiosos de reunirnos con ellos, los que partieron, para suplir la añoranza por las risas y la alegría, …es que, aquí, hay una espera muy larga, una preparación muy laboriosa y un esmero muy grande en la elaboración de todo: las ofrendas, las viandas, el mole, los higaditos! y no por ello se trata de reducir los esfuerzos, sino todo lo contrario, se trata de agradar especialmente el gusto de los invitados, es por eso que preparamos el mole durante 30 días, moliendo chocolate, semillas, preparando cuidadosamente cada ingrediente, tostandose al comal de barro, reunidos en la cocina porque la ocasión es motivo también para estar más unidos y convivir, algunos aún en una cocina de leña, techo de teja y madera donde se ubica el fogón; pues, sabemos que se acerca el día, ese día prometido que la fe, las creencias y ritos nos permiten a los mexicanos, pero en especial aquí en Oaxaca, reunirnos nuevamente, ofrecer los platillos preferidos, bebidas y objetos más preciados de los que extrañamos con todo el corazón.
Y como decimos aquí en México : Qué crees?! *Toda esta preparación tan atenta y dedicada es debido a que el día 31 de Oct, permanecemos casi todo el día en el panteón porque a las 3 de la tarde, llegarán primeramente, como todos los años, los pequeños, los que cruzaron el umbral de la vida siendo niños, y más tarde los que iniciaron su camino al más allá como adultos, esta es la recepción para ellos y la tarjeta de invitación enviada lo dice con precisión “favor de llegar puntual y con la mejor actitud para disfrutar a la familia y los alimentos”.

¿OAXACA, LA MUERTE Y LA MÚSICA?
Ahora, si hablamos de Oaxaca y los fieles difuntos, estamos obligados a mencionar a los creativos e inspirados artistas de esta tierra, que, sin excepción abordan el tema de la muerte como uno de sus principales intereses:

Y ahora, ¿qué tal si por la ruta de las artes plásticas nosembarcamos en un viaje al Barrio de Jalatlaco y a la Villa de Zaachila?
Si, para adentrarnos en un paseo que va a llenarnos la vista por medio de fachadas cubiertas con coloridos murales con calaveras, pequeños cafecitos encantadores, callecitas empedradas y la iglesia de San Matías, porque Jalatlaco es uno de los barrios más pintorescos y culturales que conocerás en el mapa mundial, tiene la tradición propia de Comparsa del Barrio desde hace más de 50 años y vale la pena destacar la actividad de un Artista Plástico nacido precisamente aquí en el Barrio de Jalatlaco, Kevin Navarro, ideólogo, expresionista, quien en sus propias palabras nos comparte:
”He hecho algunos murales en Jalatlaco, uno en colaboración con Familiares y amigos del sitio, que se le conoce como la casa de la comparsa la calle de Aldama y he hecho otros murales con la misma temática, ya que la comparsa es un ícono cultural del barrio, *es conocido por ello, y bueno, con la intención de generar una cultura visual, es por eso que retrato a las calaveras, a los diablitos, y cosas relacionadas con el día de muertos”
Ha participado en el Festival de Murales de La Villa de Zaachila, una destacada comunidad zapoteca ancestral que nos regala arte al recorrer sus calles gracias a la iniciativa de preservación y expresión artística, de colectivos como Hacer Arte y en este año, Kevin participa con el mural que se presentará el 1 y 2 de Nov, ubicado en la calle de Santos Degollado del Barrio de San Pedro.
